The 8-Day Spiritual Schedule & Tithis (8 दिनों का आध्यात्मिक कार्यक्रम)
Paryushan is deeply rooted in the Jain lunar calendar. The festival traditionally begins on the 12th or 13th day of the dark half of the Shravan month (Shravan Vad 12/13) and culminates on the 4th or 5th day of the bright half of Bhadrapad (Bhadrapad Sud 4/5). Here is how the 8 days will unfold in 2026:
| Day | English Date (2026) | Jain Tithi (Approx.) | Significance & Rituals |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Sept 8 (Tuesday) | Shravan Vad 12 / 13 | Commencement: Taking vows for fasting (Tap), Swadhyaya (study), and daily Pratikraman begins. |
| Day 2 | Sept 9 (Wednesday) | Shravan Vad 13 / 14 | Introspection: Listening to discourses from Sadhus and Sadhvis regarding shedding Karma. |
| Day 3 | Sept 10 (Thursday) | Shravan Vad Amavasya | Kalpa Sutra Welcoming: A grand procession is often held to welcome the sacred Kalpa Sutra to the Derasar/Sthanak. |
| Day 4 | Sept 11 (Friday) | Bhadrapad Sud 1 | Scripture Reading: The Kalpa Sutra reading officially begins, detailing the lives of the Tirthankaras. |
| Day 5 | Sept 12 (Saturday) | Bhadrapad Sud 2 | Mahavir Janma Vachan: A joyous celebration of Lord Mahavir's birth. The 14 auspicious dreams seen by Mother Trishala are auctioned and celebrated. |
| Day 6 | Sept 13 (Sunday) | Bhadrapad Sud 3 | Deepening Restraint: Focus shifts heavily toward Ahimsa, maintaining strict dietary restrictions and avoiding worldly engagements. |
| Day 7 | Sept 14 (Monday) | Bhadrapad Sud 4 | Preparation for Samvatsari: Seeking inner peace and clearing the mind to prepare for universal forgiveness. |
| Day 8 | Sept 15 (Tuesday) | Bhadrapad Sud 5 | Samvatsari & Forgiveness: The holiest day. An extended 3+ hour Samvatsarik Pratikraman is performed. Ends with seeking forgiveness by saying "Micchami Dukkadam". |
The 9th Day: Tapasvi Parna (तपस्वी पारणा) - Sept 16, 2026
While Paryushan officially lasts 8 days, the morning of the 9th day—Wednesday, 16th September 2026—is an event of immense joy and community gathering known as Parna.
Honoring the Atthai (8-Day Fast)
Many devoted Jains, known as Tapasvis, undertake the rigorous Atthai tap. This means they fast completely for all 8 days of Paryushan, consuming absolutely no food, and only drinking boiled water during daylight hours.
The Parna Ritual:
- On the morning of Sept 16, the community gathers at the Derasar, Upashraya, or a grand community hall.
- Tapasvis are dressed in beautiful traditional attire and are brought to the venue in a procession (Varghodo).
- Family, friends, and community members earn spiritual merit (Punya) by offering the Tapasvis their first liquid diet in over a week—usually Moong Paani (green gram water) or sugarcane juice—to gently break their fast.
- It is a celebration of human willpower, detachment from the body, and ultimate victory over physical senses.
