Antaray Karma (अंतराय कर्म)

The Invisible Obstacle in Success

"यदि उपकार किये हो किसी ने, कभी तुम्हारे जीवन में।
हो कृतज्ञ प्रेमामृत वर्षा करते रहना तुम उस पर।
शिष्टाचार यही कहता है, कभी कृतध्न नहीं बनना।"

— Be grateful to those who help you. Do not be ungrateful.

💥 What is Antaray Karma?

अंतराय (Antaray) means "Obstacle" or "Interference".

It is the karma that creates hurdles. Due to the rise of this karma, an individual faces failure in rightful activities like Charity (Daan), Profit (Labh), and Enjoyment (Bhog), even if they have the internal desire and external resources.

The Treasurer Analogy (भंडारी की उपमा):
Just as a King wants to donate money to a poor person, but the Treasurer (Bhandari) stops him or creates an excuse. Similarly, Antaray Karma acts as the Treasurer, stopping the soul from achieving its goal.

Historic Example: Due to this karma, even Tirthankara Adinath did not get food (Ahaar) for 6 months!

The 5 Types (भेद)

1. Danantaray (दानान्तराय)

Obstacle in Charity.

Even if you have money and want to donate, something stops you.

Example: A merchant tells his accountant to give money to the poor, but the accountant makes an excuse to stop it.

2. Labhantaray (लाभान्तराय)

Obstacle in Gain.

Even if you work hard, you don't get the profit or result.

Example: In the above case, the poor person not receiving the money is due to his Labhantaray karma.

3. Bhogantaray (भोगान्तराय)

Obstacle in Enjoyment (Consumables).

Unable to enjoy things that are used once (like food, water).

Example: A child is about to eat bread, but a monkey snatches it away.

4. Upabhogantaray (उपभोगान्तराय)

Obstacle in Re-usable Goods.

Unable to enjoy things used repeatedly (Clothes, Jewelry, House, Car).

Example: Having a luxury car but being too sick to travel in it.

5. Viryantaray (वीर्यान्तराय)

Obstacle in Power/Willpower.

Having the capability but feeling lazy or unenthusiastic to act.

Example: A strong person feeling too lethargic to walk to the temple.

"दारिद्र रहे ना निरंतर, सम्पत्ति रहे न कोय।
खोटा काज न किजिए, करै उचित है सोय।"

(Neither poverty nor wealth lasts forever. Therefore, avoid bad deeds and always do what is right.)
