In short
Uttam Tapa, the seventh virtue of Das Lakshan Parva, is supreme austerity. Jain teaching names six external austerities such as fasting, and six internal ones including repentance, service and meditation — all undertaken willingly and within one's own capacity.

Tapa is the most visible virtue of the ten and the most easily misunderstood. It is not self-punishment, and it is not endurance for its own sake.
Twelve austerities
Six are external: fasting, reduced intake, restricting which foods one will accept, giving up delicacies, physical endurance and solitude. Six are internal: repentance, humility, service to ascetics and elders, scriptural study, meditation and detachment from the body. The internal six are harder, and count for more.
Willing, measured, unannounced
Three conditions. Tapa must be willing — austerity performed under pressure or for display carries no benefit. It must be measured to capacity — the elderly, the unwell, children and expectant mothers are not expected to fast, and there is no merit in harm. And it is best kept quiet, or the pride of day two returns wearing new clothes.
What austerity is for
The purpose is to loosen the body's claim on attention, so that renunciation and non-attachment — the days that follow — become possible rather than theoretical.
How to observe this day
- Choose an austerity honestly matched to your health.
- If fasting, take only boiled water, in daylight hours.
- Add one internal austerity — service, or scriptural study.
- Do not announce or compare your fast.
- Consult your guru or an elder before undertaking a long fast.
Observance and timings vary between sanghs and regions. Please confirm with your local sangh and panchang. Fasting should be undertaken within your own capacity — consult your guru or an elder, and a doctor if you have any medical condition.
