Paryushan Day 3: Restraint and Self-Study

Restraint and Self-Study

In short

The third day of Shwetambar Paryushan joins restraint with swadhyay, or self-study. Devotees continue their vows while reading and reflecting on scripture, so that discipline is guided by understanding rather than practised as mere habit.

Restraint held without understanding hardens into mere rule-keeping. The third day therefore adds swadhyay — study of scripture, and through it, study of oneself.

Why study is a form of tapa

Jain teaching counts swadhyay among the internal austerities. Sitting with a text one does not yet understand, returning to it, letting it correct one's assumptions — this is genuine effort. It is also the safeguard against the subtle pride that fasting can produce.

What to read

During Paryushan many sanghs read from the Kalpa Sutra and from the Tattvartha Sutra. A householder need not read widely. Reading a single verse slowly, and asking honestly whether one's own life reflects it, is closer to swadhyay than reading a whole chapter quickly.

Study joined to conduct

The test of the third day is simple. Does what was read change anything by evening? Study that never reaches conduct has become another entertainment.

How to observe this day

  1. Read one passage of scripture slowly, twice.
  2. Attend the sangh's pravachan and listen without planning your reply.
  3. Continue yesterday's vow without loosening it.
  4. Write down one line that struck you, and keep it in view.
  5. Ask an elder or a sadhu/sadhvi about anything you did not understand.

Observance and timings vary between sanghs and regions. Please confirm with your local sangh and panchang. Fasting should be undertaken within your own capacity — consult your guru or an elder, and a doctor if you have any medical condition.

Common questions

What is swadhyay?

Swadhyay is scriptural self-study — reading, reciting and reflecting on sacred texts, and through them examining one's own conduct. Jain teaching counts it among the internal austerities.

Which scriptures are read during Paryushan?

The Kalpa Sutra is central to Shwetambar Paryushan. Many sanghs also read from the Tattvartha Sutra and from the lives of the Tirthankaras.
