In short
The sixth day of Shwetambar Paryushan deepens tapa, or penance. Jain teaching describes six external austerities such as fasting and reduced intake, and six internal ones including repentance, humility, service and meditation, all undertaken willingly and within capacity.

By the sixth day the season has become demanding, and that is intended. Tapa — austerity — is undertaken now not as punishment but as a way of burning what has accumulated.
Twelve austerities, not one
Fasting is the most visible austerity but not the whole of it. Jain teaching names six external austerities — fasting, reduced intake, restricting the foods one will accept, giving up delicacies, physical endurance and solitude — and six internal ones: repentance, humility, service, scriptural study, meditation and detachment from the body. The internal six are the harder half.
Willing, and within capacity
Two conditions make tapa genuine. It must be undertaken willingly — austerity performed to be seen, or out of competition with others, carries no benefit. And it must be within one's capacity: the elderly, the unwell, children and expectant mothers are not expected to fast, and there is no merit in harm. Ask your guru or an elder before undertaking a long fast.
What tapa is for
The purpose is not endurance for its own sake. It is to loosen the grip of appetite so that the mind becomes quiet enough for the seventh day's detachment and the eighth day's forgiveness.
How to observe this day
- Choose an austerity honestly matched to your health.
- If fasting, take boiled water only in daylight hours.
- Add one internal austerity — service, or an hour of silence.
- Do not announce your fast or compare it with anyone else's.
- Consult your guru or an elder before a long fast.
Observance and timings vary between sanghs and regions. Please confirm with your local sangh and panchang. Fasting should be undertaken within your own capacity — consult your guru or an elder, and a doctor if you have any medical condition.
