Life & History
According to Jain tradition, Padmaprabha was born into the Ikshvaku dynasty to King Sridhara (also called Dharana) and Queen Susima in the city of Kosambi.
His name, meaning 'lotus-radiant' or 'as bright as a lotus,' is traditionally linked to his mother's fondness for lotuses during pregnancy or to the reddish, lotus-like radiance associated with him; he is identified in Jain iconography by his emblem, the red lotus.
As with most Tirthankaras of this early period, little detailed biography survives beyond the traditional account of his birth, renunciation of royal life, and attainment of enlightenment and liberation.
Teaching & Significance
Padmaprabha taught the same enduring Jain path of ahimsa, truth, and detachment that leads the soul toward final liberation.
